Universal Pictures has re-released “EDtv” on Blu-ray. The film has difficulty delivering on its promise, but fans will be relieved to be able to own the picture for a reasonable price.
Warner Archive has given the 2005 romantic-comedy “Just Friends” a Blu-ray release. The film is much funnier than I remembered it being twenty years ago, with solid turns from Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, Chris Klein, and Amy Smart.
”The Little Drummer Girl” had all the makings of a classic, but the casting of Diane Keaton in the lead role as an actress turned spy disrupted the better elements of the film. Warner Archive has given the picture a Blu-ray release.
“Three the Hard Way” is a blaxploitation film that unites three of the genre’s biggest stars – Jim Kelly, Jim Brown, and Fred Williamson – to kick some white supremacist ass. Warner’s Blu-ray looks great.
Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 film “The Informant!” tells the true story of F.B.I. informant Mark Whitacre, and the crimes he simultaneously hid from the F.B.I., with an eye towards the darkly comedic aspects of the story. Matt Damon and Scott Bakula shine. Warner’s 4K is a solid upgrade.
“Pale Rider” was the only Western that Clint Eastwood directed or starred in during the Eighties. It is a solid entry in his canon, with great cinematography by Bruce Surtees. Warner’s 4K release is exceptional.
Warner Bros. have given one of Soderbergh’s more polarizing pictures, “The Good German” a 4K UHD release. The film blended film techniques from the Forties with a gritty spy thriller script.
”Slap the Monster on Page One” is a cynical look at journalism in Italy in the early Seventies that feels prescient in our age of talking heads. Gian Maria Volonte is brilliant in the lead role.
