“Messiah of Evil” is one of the best horror films from the Seventies. Blending elements of the Gothic, Lovecraft, and “Night of the Living Dead,” it creates something uniquely American. The Radiance Films release earns our highest recommendation.
Universal Pictures has given Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone” a proper UHD release. Adapted from a Joe Hill story, the film is a very well made horror-thriller with a supernatural twist. Definitely check it out!
“Evil Dead Rise” puts a new spin on Necronomicon and Deadite based scares in a new environment. It’s a rollercoaster ride. Alyssa Sutherland delivers a star making performance in the film. Warner has given the film a 4K UHD release.
Scream Factory has given Don Coscarelli’s “Bubba-Ho-Tep” a 4K UHD release. It is the only film that features Bruce Campbell as Elvis alongside Ossie Davis as JFK battling a mummy that preys on the elderly.
“Cloverfield” was destined to be a cult film. Its experimental narrative techniques set it apart from other creature features and other films in general. Paramount’s handsome steelbook edition brings the best out of the film in 4K.
Synapse Films has done an excellent job on the restoration of “Creature from Black Lake.” While the film’s merits are debatable, the attention given to restoring Dean Cundey’s cinematography is impressive.
“The Kindred” is an entertaining mad scientist – nature subverted- creature feature from the Eighties. Synapse Films has given the slime covered film an excellent release.
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” flies in the face of convention to deliver one of the most over-the-top sequels ever made.
“The Funhouse” is a well made horror film from Tobe Hooper that is set apart by strong production design, its carnival setting, and Andrew Laszlo’s cinematography. Shout! Factory’s 4K UHD release is excellent.
“Poltergeist” is arguably Tobe Hooper’s greatest film. Warner Bros. has given the film a 4K release to celebrate its fortieth anniversary. It’s a wonderful film that is as scary as it is fantastic.
