    Synapse Films has given Mike Mendez’s wild and crude 2000 horror-comedy “The Convent” a 4K UHD release. It’s a fun and irreverent movie that will appeal to those of us who grew up in that era.
  • American Movie
    Chris Smith’s classic documentary “American Movie” follows best friends Mark Borchardt and Mike Schank on their quest to complete a short film without the benefit of funding or time. Sony’s 4K UHD is the final word on this great film.
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street
    Wes Craven’s seminal horror masterpiece “A Nightmare on Elm Street” has been given a good looking and great sounding 4K release. The film is one of the most frightening ever made.
  • Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip
    Richard Pryor’s seminal stand-up special “Live on the Sunset Strip” has unexpectedly received a 4K release by Sony. The last twenty minutes feature the famous freebasing fire story.
  • Black Mass
    “Black Mass” has been given a 4K UHD release by Warner Bros. The film has a good performance by Johnny Depp, but the script could have benefitted from more polished dialogue.
  • Game Night
    “Game Night” is one of the funniest comedies of the past decade. The ensemble cast features Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Kyle Chandler, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, and Jesse Plemons. Warner’s 4K UHD is an enjoyable if slight upgrade.
  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
    “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” earns our highest recommendation. George Miller has returned to the Australian Wastelands of the Mad Max universe to deliver a truly colossal revenge picture that is also a perfect prequel to “Fury Road.” Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth both excel in the film.
  • The Lady from Shanghai
    “The Lady from Shanghai” is a deliriously strange film noir. Directed by Orson Welles, the film was recut by the studio, but still works. Rita Hayworth dazzles as a bombshell blonde. Sony has given the film a 4K UHD release.
  • Twister
    “Twister” is a seminal disaster film that still feels vibrant twenty seven years after its theatrical release. Warner’s 4K UHD release introduces a transfer supervised by Jan de Bont.
  • The Crow
    “The Crow” has been given new life by Paramount with its excellent new 4K presentation. The film remains both stunning and extremely melancholy thanks to a star making final performance by the late Brandon Lee. The film has never looked better.
  • Rolling Thunder
    Shout! Factory has given the Seventies revenge classic “Rolling Thunder” a definitive 4K UHD release. The film has aged like fine wine due to John Flynn’s down and dirty direction of a script with conflicting visions from Paul Schrader and Heywood Gould. William Devane is great in the lead role.
  • Willy’s Wonderland
    Shout! Factory has given “Willy’s Wonderland” a 4K release. Nic Cage battles possessed animatronics while paying off a car debt in the picture.
  • Quigley Down Under
    “Quigley Down Under” is a great Western adventure film set in the Australian outback of the 19th century. With great performances by Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman, the film is still a joy to watch. Shout! Studios has given the film a 4K release.
  • School Daze
    Sony Pictures has given Spike Lee’s sophomore film “School Daze” a 4K UHD release. The transfer is rock solid and the archival special features are excellent.
  • Varsity Blues
    “Varsity Blues” was one of the most beloved teenage comedy-dramas of the Nineties. Paramount has given the coming-of-age small town football film its due with a new 4K UHD release to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
  • Darkman
    Shout! Factory has done a wonderful job on their new 4K UHD presentation of Sam Raimi’s “Darkman.” Liam Neeson and Larry Drake star in the comic book style film. Highly recommended!
  • Cutting Class
    For those who can find the humor in a certain type of film failure, “Cutting Class” is a wealth of riches. I had a blast watching the 4K UHD release from MVD Visual.
  • Pet Sematary: Bloodlines
    “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” is a prequel to Stephen King’s horror classic. Despite some good ideas, the film fails to generate tension or craft compelling characters. Paramount has given the film a good 4K UHD presentation.
  • Oppenheimer
    “Oppenheimer” is an exceptional film from Christopher Nolan featuring a career best performance by Cillian Murphy. The 4K UHD earns a perfect score and our absolute highest recommendation.
  • Terms of Endearment
    “Terms of Endearment,” James L. Brooks’s tearjerker comedy which won five Academy Awards, has been given a 4K UHD upgrade by Paramount Pictures. Shirley MacLaine, Jack Nicholson, and Debra Winger are wonderful in the film.
  • Witness
    “Witness” is a thriller directed by Peter Weir starring Harrison Ford that stays focused on developing characters, setting, and the central romance. Arrow Video has given the film a definitive release.
  • Silver Bullet
    Shout! Factory has given the Stephen King adaptation “Silver Bullet” a 4K UHD release with a brand new transfer. Fans of the film will be impressed by the 4K upgrade.
  • Scrooged
    The cult classic Christmas comedy “Scrooged” starring the fantastic Bill Murray in one of his best roles has been given a wonderful 4K upgrade by Paramount. Highly, highly, recommended!
  • Cocaine Bear
    Elizabeth Banks’ ridiculous comedy-horror “Cocaine Bear” delivers laughs and gore in equal measure. Universal has given the film a great looking and sounding 4K release that will please the fans.
  • Le Mépris (Contempt)
    Le Mépris is one of Godard’s finest works. The film finds Godard working with amazing collaborators (Coutard, Bardot, Piccoli, Delerue) to create a memorable work of art at the peak of his powers. The 4K release is beautiful.
  • The Black Phone
    Universal Pictures has given Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone” a proper UHD release. Adapted from a Joe Hill story, the film is a very well made horror-thriller with a supernatural twist. Definitely check it out!
  • Kiss the Girls
    Paramount Pictures has given the 1997 thriller “Kiss the Girls” a 4K UHD release. Morgan Freeman stars as Dr. Alex Cross from James Patterson’s bestselling novels.
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
    Paramount has given “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” a beautiful 4K UHD steelbook release. It stands as one of the best teen comedies ever made. The film has aged beautifully and deserves a place in your collection.
  • The Truman Show
    “The Truman Show” has been given a fantastic 4K UHD upgrade to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The film was a great success showcasing Jim Carrey’s dramatic talents and the beautiful scenery of Seaside, Florida.
  • Enter the Dragon
    Warner Bros. have given “Enter the Dragon” a truly exceptional 4K UHD release on its 50th anniversary. The new Dolby Atmos track and beautiful transfer bring out the very best from Bruce Lee’s greatest film.
  • The Firm
    Paramount has given Sidney Pollack’s classy John Grisham adaptation “The Firm” a UHD upgrade. Starring Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman, the film is a solid slowburn thriller set in Memphis, Tennessee.
  • After Hours
    The wait is finally over! Criterion has given Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” a definitive 4K UHD release. It’s a strange trip through Soho in New York after midnight in the Eighties. It earns our highest recommendation!
  • Evil Dead Rise
    “Evil Dead Rise” puts a new spin on Necronomicon and Deadite based scares in a new environment. It’s a rollercoaster ride. Alyssa Sutherland delivers a star making performance in the film. Warner has given the film a 4K UHD release.
  • National Lampoon’s Vacation
    “National Lampoon’s Vacation” is still, forty years after its release, the ultimate family road trip comedy. Harold Ramis brought John Hughes’ script to life to make a comedy classic. The new 4K UHD by Warner is a big step forward visually.
  • Rain Man
    With stellar central performances by Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman and a great score by Hans Zimmer, “Rain Man” was a blockbuster hit in 1988. MVD Visual has given the film a definitive 4K release that is a solid reason to revisit the film.
  • Deep Impact
    “Deep Impact” came out 25 years ago. The ensemble film is a product of its time that looks at crisis through a hopeful pre-9/11 gaze. Paramount has given the film a solid UHD presentation.
  • The Maltese Falcon
    John Huston’s “The Maltese Falcon” is a flawless adaptation of the novel by Dashiell Hammett featuring Humphrey Bogart in one of his most iconic performances as Sam Spade.
  • Babylon
    “Babylon” was a big bold artistic statement by Paramount and Damien Chazelle that backfired at the box office. It will be interesting to see how the film is evaluated critically in the decades that follow. The Paramount 4K UHD release is demo quality.
  • Training Day
    “Training Day” is one of the best urban crime films thanks to excellent performances by Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke and an excellent soundtrack of Los Angeles rap. Warner Bros. have given the film a strong 4K transfer and excellent Atmos track.
  • Bubba-Ho-Tep
    Scream Factory has given Don Coscarelli’s “Bubba-Ho-Tep” a 4K UHD release. It is the only film that features Bruce Campbell as Elvis alongside Ossie Davis as JFK battling a mummy that preys on the elderly.
  • Cloverfield
    “Cloverfield” was destined to be a cult film. Its experimental narrative techniques set it apart from other creature features and other films in general. Paramount’s handsome steelbook edition brings the best out of the film in 4K.
  • Top Gun: Maverick
    “Top Gun: Maverick” gave theatrical audiences a reason to take a breath and eat some popcorn. It is a satisfying sequel and a loving tribute to Tony Scott. “Maverick” is our favorite film from 2022.
  • A Christmas Story
    “A Christmas Story” is one of the best Christmas films, but it also is an exceptionally rendered coming-of-age film as well. Bob Clark’s classic film has been given an excellent 4K UHD upgrade from Warner Bros.
  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
    “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is the best holiday comedy ever made. Chevy Chase was never better than as Clark Griswold, and John Hughes’s script is exceptional. Warner Bros. has given the film a 4K release.
  • Casablanca
    “Casablanca” is an emotionally rewarding and thrilling war time classic that deserves all the acclaim that has been heaped on it since its initial theatrical release. The 4K UHD from Warner Bros. earns our very highest recommendation!
  • Pulp Fiction
    “Pulp Fiction” is considered by many to be Tarantino’s greatest film. It is certainly his most influential and one of the definitive films of the independent movement of the Nineties.
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
    “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” flies in the face of convention to deliver one of the most over-the-top sequels ever made.
  • Lifeforce
    Tobe Hooper’s first film for the Cannon Group is as ambitious as it is preposterous and insane. “Lifeforce” gave Tobe Hooper a $20 million budget, and he gave the world nude space vampires and a zombie apocalypse. Shout! Factory has given the Theatrical Cut a UHD release.
  • The Funhouse
    “The Funhouse” is a well made horror film from Tobe Hooper that is set apart by strong production design, its carnival setting, and Andrew Laszlo’s cinematography. Shout! Factory’s 4K UHD release is excellent.
  • Poltergeist
    “Poltergeist” is arguably Tobe Hooper’s greatest film. Warner Bros. has given the film a 4K release to celebrate its fortieth anniversary. It’s a wonderful film that is as scary as it is fantastic.
  • The Fog – 4K UHD
    “The Fog” is one of the most atmospheric horror films ever made. John Carpenter’s classic has been given an amazing new UHD release by Shout! Factory that ups the ante with an Atmos track.
  • Drive (1997)
    MVD Rewind has teamed with 88 Films to bring the 1997 action film “Drive” to 4K UHD. Boasting a new Atmos track and HDR, the film has never looked or sounded better.
  • Scream 2
    Reuniting screenwriter Kevin Williamson with master horror filmmaker Wes Craven, “Scream 2” is one of the rare sequels that works perfectly as a continuation of the prior film. The Paramount UHD is a big leap forward visually.
  • The Lost Boys
    “The Lost Boys” is a teenage vampire film from 1987 that still works because of its strong visuals, great cast, and off-beat comedic charms. Warner Bros. UHD release looks and sounds fantastic.
  • Flatliners
    Joel Schumacher’s “Flatliners” has been given a significant 4K UHD upgrade by Arrow Video with color grading approved by cinematographer Jan de Bont. It is far and away the best way to experience the film.
  • Alligator
    Shout! Factory has rewarded patient fans of the cult classic “Alligator” with a truly exceptional 4K UHD Collector’s Edition. Robert Forster tries his best to fend off reptilian carnage in the sewers of LA.
  • Event Horizon
    “Event Horizon” is one of the best horror and science fiction films of the Nineties. The new Paramount 4K UHD is the best presentation yet of the film.
  • True Romance
    “True Romance” is one of the best films of the Nineties. Watching Tony Scott interpret the words of Quentin Tarantino while maintaining his signature visual style is an absolute treat. The 4K UHD release by Arrow Video looks gorgeous and features the legacy content alongside a few new features.
  • God Told Me To
    “God Told Me To” is a unique thriller from the inimitable mind of independent guerrilla filmmaker Larry Cohen. The Blue Underground release looks and sounds fantastic and features a new commentary by Steve Mitchell and Troy Howarth.
  • Ambulance
    “Ambulance” is a solid Michael Bay film. While a little long and exhausting, the film delivers the Bayhem that his fans expect and one of the best sequences by the director yet. The 4K UHD is reference quality and will definitely please fans.
  • Candyman
    “Candyman” is a horror milestone from the Nineties. The film is still as captivating as when it was first released. Shout! Factory’s new UHD earns our highest recommendation thanks to an improved HDR enhanced image and a wonderful Dolby Atmos track.
  • The Untouchables
    “The Untouchables” benefits from great direction by Brian De Palma and a strong cast made up of Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, and Robert De Niro. The Paramount UHD release is a vast upgrade from the 2007 Blu-ray release.
  • The Batman
    “The Batman” is the best Batman film since “The Dark Knight.” Matt Reeves’s vision of Gotham is one of the most compelling yet. The Warner Bros. 4K UHD is one of the most impressive releases this year on the format.
  • Beverly Hills Cop II
    “Beverly Hills Cop II” is a sequel that in many ways is the equal of the first film. The cinematography by Jeffrey Kimball and direction by Tony Scott make the film a winner. The UHD by Paramount looks fantastic.
  • Beverly Hills Cop
    “Beverly Hills Cop” is the film that elevated Eddie Murphy to superstar status. A great blend of comedy and action, it helped establish the formula for buddy cop movies in the Eighties. Paramount’s UHD release is the best the film has looked.
  • The Godfather: Part II
    “The Godfather: Part II” is a brilliant successor to the classic first film. It stands on its own as an artistic triumph which still resonates today. The 4K UHD is exceptional.
  • The Godfather
    “The Godfather” is one of the best crime dramas ever made. Coppola directed an ensemble cast of Brando, Pacino, Caan, Duvall, and more in roles that defined their careers. The Paramount 4K UHD is an essential purchase with a jaw-dropping new restoration.
  • Wild Things
    “Wild Things” was one of the last erotic thrillers to see large scale success at the box office. With a strong neo-noir story and sly sense of humor, it has aged well. The Arrow Video 4K UHD is gorgeous.
  • An American Werewolf in London – 4K UHD
    Arrow Video has updated the classic “An American Werewolf in London” to 4K UHD. One of the best horror films of all time is now available in a truly definitive edition that keeps the excellent supplements from the 2019 release and updates the video to its best presentation yet.
  • Juice
    “Juice” revolves around hip hop and is part of the urban cinema boom of the Nineties, but the core story is Neo Noir that recalls crime films of the Forties. Paramount has given the film a UHD release.
  • Candyman (2021)
    “Candyman” is not a reboot or remake. It is a clever and well made sequel to the classic 1992 horror film and easily one of the best horror films of the last couple years. The Universal Pictures 4K UHD looks and sounds amazing.
  • Dune
    “Dune” is a brilliantly realized adaptation of the first half of the seminal science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. The 4K UHD is the first must-own release of 2022.
  • Carlito’s Way
    “Carlito’s Way” is one of the best films from virtuoso filmmaker Brian De Palma. Pacino and Sean Penn are both fantastic in the film, and the final sequence is one of the best that De Palma put to celluloid. The Universal Pictures UHD is an excellent presentation of the film.
  • The Shawshank Redemption
    “The Shawshank Redemption” is one of the best films of all time and is the best prison drama ever made. Warner Bros. has given the film a new 4K UHD release that brings out the very best from Roger Deakins’ cinematography.
  • Scream
    “Scream” was a generation defining horror film when it was released in 1996. Wes Craven reminded everyone that he was a master at generating suspense. The script by Kevin Williamson still feels fresh twenty five years later. The new Paramount 4K UHD is a big improvement over all prior releases.
  • A Clockwork Orange
    “A Clockwork Orange” is a masterpiece. Fifty years after its initial release, none of the film’s power has been diminished. The Warner Bros. 4K UHD release earns our highest recommendation.
  • G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
    “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” has not aged particularly well, but still will appeal to young kids. Paramount has given the film a 4K UHD release in conjunction with the release of “Snake Eyes.”
  • Jaws
    “Jaws” is a masterpiece. One of the most imitated films ever made and the greatest natural horror film ever made. The 4K UHD from Universal Studios looks and sounds great.
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” is a perfect finale to an exceptional trilogy. Sean Connery is an amazing addition to the cast, and the script by Jeffrey Boam is wonderful. The new 4K UHD by Paramount is exceptional in every regard.
  • Mortal Kombat
    “Mortal Kombat” is an entertaining and uneven film that at times lives up to its promise and at times misses the mark. The 4K UHD from Warner Bros. looks and sounds great.
  • Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” is the most underrated film in the series. While it divided critics and audiences, it has stood the test of time. The 4K UHD is a big leap forward.
  • Nobody
    Bob Odenkirk is officially an action star. “Nobody” is the best action film and one of the best releases of 2021. The Universal Pictures 4K UHD earns our highest recommendation.
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
    “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is still the greatest adventure film ever made. The new 4K UHD included in Paramount’s box set is an excellent upgrade and should be owned by all filmlovers. It has never looked better.
  • Scanner Cop II
    “Scanner Cop II” continues to develop the world of Scanner Cop Sam Staziak and introduces the villainous Volkin played by Patrick Kilpatrick. The 4K UHD from Vinegar Syndrome is impeccably done.
  • Scanner Cop
    “Scanner Cop” is an enjoyable piece of mid-Nineties straight-to-video science fiction. Vinegar Syndrome has done a truly exceptional job restoring the film on their new 4K UHD release. Fans of this film or genre should consider it a mandatory purchase.
  • The Final Countdown
    “The Final Countdown” is an enjoyable science fiction film that benefits from a remarkable cast and some truly fantastic visual moments. Fans of “The Twilight Zone” should take note of the film. Blue Underground’s UHD release is visually stunning for the most part and features an excellent Atmos track.
  • Mission: Impossible (4K)
    “Mission: Impossible” stands out in the series dues to the visionary direction by Brian De Palma. The 4K UHD presentation of the film uses HDR to the film’s benefit in its best presentation since its theatrical release.
  • The Day of the Beast
    “Day of the Beast” by Spanish filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia is a fantastic thriller and dark comedy revolving around madcap religious antics, fascism, and the Apocalypse. The Severin Films 4K UHD release is a wonderful way to view the film.
  • Perdita Durango
    “Perdita Durango” is one hell of a wild ride from Spanish filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia starring Rosie Perez, Javier Bardem, and James Gandolfini. Severin Films has given the film a true uncut release in UHD.
  • Godzilla
    “Godzilla” from director Gareth Edwards does the miraculous – it manages to make a good fan pleasing film from the long running Kaiju series. The director’s skills save the film from abundant pitfalls. The Warner Bros. UHD is demo material.
  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
    “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” is still the best film from 2019. It isn’t even close. We revisited the film after reading “Helter Skelter.”
  • Vigilante
    Vigilante is a no-nonsense urban justice film starring the great Robert Forster and Fred Williamson. Blue Underground continues to amaze with this 4K release.
  • Tremors
    Tremors was a staple on cable television and at the video rental store in the early-Nineties. Arrow Video has given the film a deluxe 4K release that fans will love.
  • Total Recall – Steelbook
    Total Recall is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining science fiction films from the Nineties. Director Paul Verhoeven delivered one of his best films featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. There is a beautifully designed limited edition steelbook worth seeking out.
  • Tenet
    Tenet is one of the most ambitious and divisive films from director Christopher Nolan. The UHD release by Warner Bros. is one of the best looking on the format.
  • Blade
    Blade was one of the first movies that really understood how to bring a Marvel Comics character to life. Wesley Snipes is perfectly cast and the film has a solid script from David S. Goyer. Warner Bros has given the film an UHD release.
  • Suspiria – 4K UHD
    Featuring an introduction from film scholar and author Troy Howarth! Suspiria remains one of the most beautifully shot horror films. An absolute artistic triumph from Dario Argento and one of the best films ever made.
  • Full Metal Jacket
    Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket is a truly unique take on the Vietnam war. Warner have given the film a beautiful new 4K transfer that breathes new life into the film.
  • Beetlejuice
    Beetlejuice is one of the best films from director Tim Burton. A totally unique comedy with an amazing performance by Michael Keaton. The new 4K UHD presentation by Warner Bros is Incredible.
  • The Goonies
    The new presentation of the classic Richard Donner film The Goonies is a tremendous upgrade visually from all prior versions. Warner Bros. Have given the film a beautiful new 4K release.
  • Gremlins
    Gremlins is one of my favorite comedies from the Eighties and One of Joe Dante’s best films. The new UHD substantially improves the video quality over the old 2009 Blu-ray.
  • Brawl in Cell Block 99
    The sophomore feature by S. Craig Zahler is a well crafted piece of grind house cinema with a stellar lead performance by Vince Vaughn. This one is not to be missed!
  • The Deer Hunter
    Michael Cimino’s excellent war time classic The Deer Hunter remains a divisive and wonderful work of fiction. Shout!Factory has given the film a new UHD release that should be bought by fans immediately.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
    Sonic the Hedgehog is a pleasant distraction to watch with the kids. The film is decidedly clean and innocent which puts it above most of the pack as far as family movies go. The Paramount UHD release looks and sounds great.
  • Christine – Pop Art Steelbook Edition
    Christine is not my favorite John Carpenter film, but it is still a fun Stephen King adaptation with a killer score.
  • Halloween
    Halloween changed the game for horror films. One of the most influential films ever made gets an upgrade visually on the 4K release from Lionsgate.
  • 1917
    1917 is an extraordinary achievement in the art of cinematography and one of the best films of 2019. The 4K UHD disc ranks as one of the best releases of 2020.
  • Casino
    Martin Scorsese teams up again with writer Nicholas Pileggi to adapt his book Casino. Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci star. Universal Studios has upgraded the film to 4K.
  • John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
    John Wick returns in this excellent third entry in the series. Some of the most insanely choreographed fight scenes ever put to celluloid and great roles for Mark Dacascos and Halle Berry make this film a winner.
  • Knives Out
    Rian Johnson’s newest film updates the murder-mystery genre with acidic wit and a stellar cast. Easily one of the best films of 2019.
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
    One of the greatest artistic achievements in film receives the deluxe 4K treatment it deserves in this must-own release.
  • Ad Astra
    Brad Pitt goes into outer space after his long lost father Tommy Lee Jones in this science fiction film by James Gray.
