When I was growing up, I was not allowed to watch anything that was rated higher than my age without seeking permission from my parents. This meant that while most kids were watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, I was browsing the aisles at Premiere Video seeking out films that did not bear the monicker of the dreaded PG-13 or R rating. The rating system essentially was blocking me from watching anything that was aimed at intelligent viewers. The PG rating was not a hindrance to filmmakers in the past – think about Jaws, E.T., Gremlins, Where Eagles Dare, and the list is very long. But, at some point, the studios seemingly decided that every movie that was not at least PG-13 would not have the smallest glimmer of adult themes. As a young man who craved intellectual stimulation, I was really taken with Joe Dante’s film Matinee. What I loved about the film was that it’s a film about the love of movies – in particular campy sci-fi films of the fifties and sixties. I felt that same love.

Joe Dante had finished his sequel to Gremlins and had created the ill-fated but beloved television series Eerie, Indiana when he began work on Matinee. Matinee once again paired Dante with screenwriter Charlie Haas who had worked on Gremlins 2: The New Batch. The production of the film relied at first on some outside financing along with financing Universal Pictures. When the outside financing disappeared, Universal Pictures financed the completion of the picture. The film was released by Universal Pictures on January 29, 1993. Unfortunately, the advertising of the film failed to gain the film an audience and the film quickly left the theaters despite critical acclaim. Despite doing over nine million dollars at the box office, Matinee failed to make back the studio’s investment. Over the years the film has continued to be rediscovered by new audiences and is considered one of Joe Dante’s best films.

Key West, Florida. 1962. The Cuban missile crisis. Teenager Gene and his younger brother Dennis attempt to adjust to life in Key West where their father has been stationed with the Navy. All the moves have made Gene feel more interested in scary movies than friendships. While Gene’s dad is sent away because of the trouble with Cuba, Gene forms a friendship with Stan. Stan is a girl crazy young man who is taken with the more experienced Sherry. While the threat of nuclear war becomes a harsh reality, Gene meets a rebellious and liberalized young girl named Sandra. While Key West feels fully alert, horror film master Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman doing his best William Castle impersonation) arrives in town with his lead actress Ruth Corday (Cathy Moriarty) to premiere his latest gimmick horror film – Mant! Gene pursues a friendship with the director in anticipation of the big show.

As a kid this film had a profound impact on me. Watching the ridiculous William Castle style throwbacks in the film at a young age helped to steer me towards enjoyment of camp. This was at least three years before I saw Army of Darkness and fell in love with camp and horror at the same time. This film works partially because it didn’t talk down to the kids that watched it but instead tried to mirror closely how kids talk and behave. The young kids are trying to listen to Lenny Bruce without getting caught by their parents or they are trying to find ways of winning over the fairer sex. They were not spending their time talking about water slides and ice cream, but instead about their worries and wishes. Their actions all seem pretty realistic. As a kid, I appreciated that a movie like this existed that was basically a love letter to film. As a film fan, it let me know that there were other people out there like me that might enjoy the same things as me.

This film also did a good job of explaining the Cold War atomic fear mindset that my parents had faced during the early Sixties that was pretty far removed by the time I was growing up. For kids, it can be a good history lesson. It also is a good reminder that not everything you are told is true. The scenes where the kids prepare for bombs falling by ducking and covering helped to instill a healthy distrust of authority.

As an adult, I still think the film holds up really well. John Goodman is great in the role of Frank Woolsey. He was perfectly cast and there is no way to improve upon his portrayal. It was obvious that Goodman completely understood what the film was going for and his performance anchors the film. Cathy Moriarty is dead-pan and very funny as the female muse to Woolsey. There are a lot of great bit parts, including small roles for John Sayles, Dick Miller, and Robert Picardo, but I think it is worth mentioning that the kid actors do a great job of handling the material. Sometimes kid actors can ruin a kids film. Even as a kid I immediately liked who was chosen to play each role, something that would drive me crazy otherwise. For example, I remember how much I disliked the main kid actor in the movie Blank Check, but I never felt that way about the kids in Matinee. Joe Dante made some of my favorite movies from my childhood and this was one of his most personal films. Watching it now I get a tremendous kick out of the posters that he personally chose for the settings of these films. This film has tons of Easter eggs that will keep film fans smiling like idiots for the duration. This was Joe Dante’s biggest critical success and it deserved a better showing at the theaters than it received.

I watched the film with my two sons and I was happy to see that it was just as enjoyable for the next generation. For myself and many others, this was one of the best family-friendly films of the Nineties. It is great to see it on Blu-ray.

Video

Shout! Factory have done a pretty good job on the transfer of the film using an MPEG-4 AVC codec of a 2K restoration. This is one of those cases where the film looks much better than it has in any previous format, but it is impossible to not wish that this film could have been given even more of the royal treatment. My reasoning is that this film has persistent grain, but unlike a Criterion release where the grain has been minimized but is still there for detail, some of the grain here is larger and more evident. I am curious whether or not this was the same transfer that Arrow Video released in Britain a couple years ago. This is still bitching about something that looks leagues better than any version of the film from years past. Overall, I was pleased but I think when fans of the film see this transfer, they will crave a 4K transfer for someday in the future (however unlikely that really is.) When I watched the film on my UHD television, it upconverted pretty nicely. 

Audio

Matinee boasts a DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround track that is not extremely active all the time, but does allow itself some pretty good loud moments at times. The score by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith is really playful and enjoyable, matching the tone of the film perfectly. Dialogue is crystal clear. The highs and lows in the film are leveled well enough that I did not need to play with my remote often, which I appreciate. Overall, I think this movie sounds great! And for the purist they have also included a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio Stereo soundtrack if you want it to be less robust.

Master of the Matinee : (1080p, 20:29) a lengthy and enjoyable interview with Joe Dante. Joe goes into good detail about the process of getting the film made including the script rewrites, failed financial backing, Universal’s production and release of the film, and the failure at the box office. Fans will definitely want to check this feature out.

The Leading Lady : (1080p, 12:02) an interview with Cathy Moriarty. She seems to look back very fondly on her experience making the film. The interview was decent, but not incredibly interesting.

Mantastic: The Making of a Mant : (1080p, 25:12) Jim Mcpherson, designer of the Mant, discusses at length the process behind making the Mant. and the actor that played The Mant, Mark McCracken, discusses his experience.

Out of the Bunker: (1080p, 16:17) an interview with Lisa Jakub who played Sandra. It was great to see what she was doing since quitting acting in 2000. She had become an author and written two books.

Making a Monster Theater: (1080p,15:35) an interview with Production Designer Steven Legler. Production designers do so much towards making the films work, it was nice to see an extended interview with one.

The Monster Mix: (1080p, 11:39) an interview with editor Marshall Harvey. The most interesting aspect about this feature is the discussion of the different types of film used for different sequences in the film and the discussion of the twenty minute cut of the Mant movie.

Lights! Camera! Reunion! (1080p, 21:13) an interview with director of photography John Hora. This is a great feature. His discussion of the problems involved in shooting at Universal in Florida is a blast to watch.

•Paranoia In Ant Vision – Joe Dante Discusses The Making Of The Film (1080p, 32:37) an excellent interview with Joe Dante. Probably the best feature on the disk despite not being completely new. There is some overlap with the ideas discussed in the other feature, but this is good stuff.

•MANT! – The Full Length Version Of The Film With Introduction By Joe Dante (1080p, 22:45) amazing to see this put together completely. The intro by Dante is really good because it goes a long way Howard’s saying where some of the dialogue and effects for the movie came from.

Matinee had a major impact on me as a child. I can’t even tell you how many times I rented and rewatched this movie growing up. As an adult it was great to see that it holds up remarkably well due to a strong script and great performances by John Goodman and Cathy Moriarty. Shout! Factory have provided a pretty good transfer of the film and the supplements are extensive and enjoyable. As a fan of the film, and of director Joe Dante, I had been waiting on this release for a long time. I am glad to say that overall it was well worth the wait. Fans should pick up a copy immediately with no fear of buyer’s remorse.
